Kelly Kern is a painter, illustrator, and animator working in Western
Pennsylvania.
Her style is a modern one, combining impressionist influences with her
extensive
background in children's computer game animation.
Expressionism is the term she uses to describe her paintings, her primary
artistic focus.
"My heart really goes into my work. My emotions, moods, and feelings (good
and bad)
really impact the style and direction of a piece. One of my favorite
paintings is my
Sunflower, which I started when I was really in a sad place and then
completed
painting much later, when my life had done a complete turnaround. It feels
very sad and beautiful to me at the same time."
Her art roots go back as long as she can remember. "Winning the blue ribbon
for best
artist in first grade got me hooked," she noted. "It seemed like the only
thing I could
really do." From there, Kelly graduated to paint by numbers and she vividly
recalls
the smell of the oil paint. "Looking back, those paint fumes were probably a
health hazard to a kid that young. That could explain a lot."
Kelly studied Visual Communications at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh
before
embarking on a long career as artist and animator for the computer games
industry.
For over a decade, Kelly worked for some of the biggest companies in the
business
including Paragon Software, MicroProse Software, Take-Two Interactive, and
Acclaim / Sculptured Software. She has also enjoyed working as a freelance
artist
and animator for Disney Interactive. Today, Kelly continues to freelance in
the
industry when interesting and challenging opportunities arise.
Kelly's major influences include the masters: Van Gogh and Monet.
"When you stand in front of them and see how thick the paint is and see
every brushstroke
that no book or postcard could ever capture. . . and how massive the
waterlillies are. . .
how they surround you - as if you're standing in them." These influences
have had
a direct impact on Kelly's style. "I think that's why I tend to paint big .
. .
to not put a limit on size. . . even if I have to tie a piece of art
to the top of my car to deliver it."
Recently inspired by the work of Ron Korczynski, whose work she finds
remarkably vivid and beautiful, Kelly has begun throwing pottery and is
experimenting
with merging her love of painting with the sculpture medium, painting
directly
on the pieces with underglazes to create unique 3D painted works.
Kelly paints from her private studio in a woodsy suburb
of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her five dogs, all rescues, are always by her
side.
A true animal lover, Kelly donates proceeds from the sale of her works to
American Bulldog Rescue of PA.
